Wired magazine is not for geeks anymore

After reading an article about Wired Magazine in the New York Times, I realized why I stopped reading it a few years ago. During the late 90’s new Geek and Tech Magazines were popping up like weeds in a garden. Then the dot com era came to an end, and so did most of the magazines.

Magazines like The Industry Standard, Red Herring, Business 2.0, eCompany Now all went down the digital drain, but Wired rowed carefully and slowly away from its geek origins and survived.

When Wired rowed away from me that was when I stopped reading it. I thought “Wow this is turning in to a watered down tech mag”. That was true, but what I didn’t know was it was moving to a new demographic… the mainstream. There new niche was not tech, but the culture that surrounds it. Wired reinvented themselves and survived.

I usually only read Wired when I am at the airport, trying to kill time, but I think I might give it a second chance now that I know it’s not a mediocre tech magazine, but a kick ass tech culture magazine.
